We asked our hair-and-makeup master Lisa Martensen to share the key components for creating this understated aesthetic.

“The inspiration for this look was true cowgirl,” Lisa said. “It’s the Chisholm Trail, right? So, working cowgirl on the cattle drive, it’s definitely not going to be polished and perfected. It’s going to be soft and subtle, in natural earthy tones. The hardest part of creating this look might be resisting the urge to overdo it.”

It goes against DDR’s very nature to even utter the phrase, but we’ve gotta go with the guru on this one – less is more.

FACE: Tarte Shape Tape Ultra Creamy Concealer

“I didn’t use any foundation at all, just concealer around the nose and under the eyes. Keep the face as fresh as possible. If you absolutely can’t bear going bare, try to stick with something light and low coverage, like a tinted moisturizer.”

EYE: Bobbi Brown All Nudes Shadow Palette - Malted

“Keep it au natural here, too. I swept a soft, muted khaki eyeshadow over the lid and then smudged it along the lower lash line. No eyeliner, no mascara. I know it’s hard to forgo the mascara – I swear, it’s like the cosmetic security blanket – but just trust me!”

CHEEK: Tom Ford Soleil Glow Bronzer

“I’ve mentioned this product before, so some of you gals may already own it – it’s a good one, it’s a go-to of mine. I’m not one who believes cosmetics have to be expensive to be good, but Tom Ford is a brand I will splurge on. Anyway, matte bronzer for this look. A true cowgirl on the trail isn’t going to have any sort of shimmer or metallic, and definitely a sun-kissed over a pinky blush.”

LIP: RMS Liplights Cream Lip Gloss in Bare

“This is another one I’ve recommended before, and this one is particularly good to have in your arsenal because it’s essentially clear – maybe a light tint of pink – but it can be a top layer over any lipstick without changing the hue too much. For Chisholm, I didn’t layer, just dabbed this on the lip for a natural, moisturized look.”

    HAIR:

“Soft, rough-and-tumble waves. A loose braid would work, too!”
