THE YELLOWSTONE LOOK
“Yellowstone was funny, because it’s so outdoorsy,” said Lisa Martensen, our long-time stylist. “In reality, no one is getting dolled up to go fly fishing, right? And we were actually getting the girls fly fishing lessons, with guides and everything. So the name of the game with this shoot was ‘make them look like they know what they’re doing, but make them look good doing it’!”
HAIR
“It has to look authentic to the scene, like they’ve actually been outdoors, been on the river, so it needs to be ‘up’ in some way, off the face. With Kaylin, since hers is long, I decided to do fishtail braids; I gave them a little texturizing spray and braided them very loosely, and then I loosened them even more, letting out a few wispies and fly-aways for that effortless, outdoorsy effect. For Lozzie, we did a ponytail with volume; her face shape carries a ponytail well. Her hair is naturally pretty straight, so I used a large-barrel curling iron to give it a slight wave for texture, and then I used some volumizing product and again, very loose, put it in a classic ponytail and let some loose pieces hang down.”

Kaylin:
“It’s texturizing hairspray, and it’s pliable. It’s perfect when you need a little texture and hold, but don’t want to look overdone.”
Lozzie:
“This is a dry powder with a little bit of hold; I use it mostly for volume.”
“I think we’ve talked about these before, but they’re a must for me when doing any kind of ponytail. In fact, I always make the models give them back to me at the end of a shoot; I joke that they’re ‘hard to find and easy to lose’!”
FACE
“Fresh face, very minimal. I mean, we’re going fly fishing, right?” Lisa laughed. “I’m starting with my all-time favorite Embriolysse moisturizer, which is not only good for the face, but it gives it a bit of a glow. Other than that, I’m just doing spot touch-ups with my go-to RMS concealer and a light brush of Laura Mercier powder on the T-zone; I’m really letting the natural face shine through.”
EYE
“Believe it or not, I’m toning down the brow for this look. Still some soft fill with a powder, but not as heavy as usual. As for the lid, I’m actually not using any pigment, I’m only dabbing on some Vitamin E oil, which will give it a sheen and kind of enhance the natural color. And of course, no mascara.”
CHEEK
“I’m layering a pink and an orange on the cheek. Right on the apple, I call it ‘tin soldier’ cheek because it looks like one of the tin soldiers from The Nutcracker before I blend it. I want them to look healthy. I’m not using any bronzer or contour on the cheek, but I will give you this pro tip: I am dusting some bronzer around the hairline which will give a subtle sun-kissed look of having been outside all day.”
LIP
“Same concept as the cheek, really – layering a pink and a kind of peachy orange. I want a soft peach that looks natural but a little flushed. I apply the color in the center of the lip, and then feather it out toward the edges with a lipstick brush so it doesn’t have a harsh edge.”
