There are some items that are quintessential to a cowgirl’s closet. You know you need a cowboy hat. You know you need great boots. You may even know you ought to own -- or be on the lookout for -- your own signature squash blossom. One piece that often gets overlooked, but really solidifies your Southwestern style status, is a concho belt.

Here are a few of our favorite ways to wear one:

    BELT THE BROOM

This is a classic. Broom skirts and concho belts go together like leather and lace. The elastic waist of the skirt is just begging to be accessorized and we can’t think of any better way to do it.

    BELT THE BULKY

We love a blanket coat as much as the next cowgirl, but sometimes your shape can get lost in it. Adding a concho belt on the outside of your coat can accentuate your waist and create a flattering silhouette with a hint of southwestern style.

    BELT THE DRESS

Again, adding a concho belt to a shapeless sundress can change your silhouette, but it can also serve as a statement piece to break up a monochromatic maxi.

    BELTS & JEANS

This combo seems like a no-brainer, but sometimes the size and shape of concho belts results in it not being the first one you reach for to accent your favorite pair of jeans… but it should be. It doesn’t have to go through your belt loops, just layer it on top!

    BELTS & VELVET

This is one of those contrast-and-complement combinations. The velvet is really luxe and elegant, the concho belt is solid and sturdy, almost rugged. It brings that hi-low feel to your look – very Millicent Rogers.

    BELT LIKE A BADASS

Concho belts are a great way to accessorize with attitude. Slinging a classic concho low across your hips has almost a gun-slinger, “I don’t give a damn” vibe to it that exudes effortless awesomeness and confidence.

    BELT LIKE A BEAUTY QUEEN

Ok, so maybe “beauty queen” is a stretch, but what we’re getting at is that there’s an upscale, elegant way to style a concho belt. Again, think Millicent Rogers. Pair it with crisp blouses or luxe velvets and furs and suddenly cowgirl meets classy.

    BITTY BELTS

We generally tend to picture large silver conchos on a wide strap when we think of concho belts, but that’s not always the case. These southwestern statement pieces are sometimes crafted in smaller, more slender versions which actually do fit through your belt loops. Or, we also love doubling up -- pairing a skinny concho with a statement-sized one for a look that’s twice as nice!

What’s your favorite way to wear yours? (Don’t have one yet? It’s high time you got one, cowgirl!)
