QUEEN OF THE COWGIRLS: KIT MONCRIEF

If you’ve been in the stock show scene, spent much time in and around Fort Worth, or really just been paying attention in Texas, you’ve likely heard of the magnificent and magnanimous Kit Moncrief. This blue-eyed beauty has worn more hats than we’ve probably ever made, from the President of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame to the Board of Trustees for Texas Christian University (go Frogs!) to the Vice President of Moncrief Cancer Foundation. She’s a sweetheart of the Stock Show, serving as a FWSSR board member, riding in the grand entry for more than 25 years, and having a horse represented in every show since she was 10 years old. She’s as philanthropic as she is fabulous, and we’re honored that she’s a fan of the brand and a friend of the DDR family. She graciously allowed us to ask her a few questions and spotlight her in honor of Women’s History Month.

You're an inspiration to hundreds of women, cowgirls, Horned Frogs, and animal lovers alike. Who is someone who inspires you?

My three daughters Gloria, Adelaide and Celia are my greatest inspiration. I am so amazed everyday as they balance family, careers and community service with grace. Watching them really gives me hope for the future of our country and the continuation of the love of God and family values we all need.

Choosing a favorite cause must be like declaring a favorite child, but do you have a particular philanthropy that really pulls at your heartstrings?  

You are right, they all hold a special place in my heart, but the one that particularly pulls my heartstrings is Saving Hope, the rescue organization we started when we found the dog Hope severely abused and abandoned on our ranch. Hope has become a symbol of hope and has helped us all to put in the necessary time and dedication to spread the word and raise the resources to save thousands of animals’ lives.

Shifting from philanthropy to fashion... How/when were you first introduced to Double D Ranch? 

I have been involved with the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame since the mid-90’s which has given me an outlet and many opportunities to express my love of dressing western. I remember seeing and loving the first Double D collections around that time and have enjoyed the brand ever since.

What do you think it is about DDR that speaks to/appeals to you, in terms of both the clothing and the brand/company as a whole?  

The clothing speaks to me because I appreciate the authenticity of the designs and images used. I understand the Cowgirl Museum collection has often been an inspiration for different collections which is terrific. It is great that Double D appreciates the history and pays tribute to cowgirls of the past.

You’ve had a chance to visit the new Fort Worth flagship store. What do you think of it?

The Fort Worth store is beautiful. I like to go there not only to shop but also to enjoy the store’s wonderful design and layout. It is curated to perfection.

Do you have a favorite piece from the current Desert Desperados collection? An all-time favorite piece?  

I love all my Double D pieces and always look forward to an opportunity to wear them. Currently I am obsessed with the Oscar Betz earrings…they are beautiful and comfortable to wear. I’ve bought three pair! I also love my long fringe coat and your silk blouses. Love the chairs, also!

Any words of wisdom, advice, or encouragement you’d care to share with us?

The best words of wisdom I know came from Cowgirl Hall of Fame inductee Connie Reeves who at her induction at age 96 said, ‘always saddle your own horse, I still do’. To me that says it all and speaks to all of life… be responsible, take care and get things done! And I would encourage everyone to visit the Cowgirl Museum and learn about Connie and all the inspiring women who are great role models.
