PURPLE AS A PUGILIST

Many a young’uns in the late ‘80s probably learned from the cult classic Young Guns that a pugilist is a fancy word for fighter, specifically a boxer. And, well, we’ve got to say, it is quite an apt term for purple – particularly as an accessory – because as pretty as it is, it sure packs a punch!

“I think purple spiny oyster is about to get a LOT of love,” Cheryl laughed. “Here’s the thing, I’ve always been enamored with it because I’m fascinated by how unique it is. It’s like a snowflake, every piece is unlike any other piece. The shades, the striations, it’s all different, which makes arranging them together even more of an art. As cheesy as it may sound, it’s like nature’s brushstrokes.”

It's true. Even in a single stacker – even one of Federico’s, who is masterful at uniformity -- you can appreciate each stone as its own brand of beautiful. And as lavender leaps to the forefront of fashion, it’s certain you’re going to start seeing these stones fly off the shelves.

“Purple is particularly fun because it’s somewhat unexpected,” Cheryl said. “Turquoise is always the leading lady in the southwestern jewelry realm, and you have your corals, your mother of pearl, and your onyx. But the spiny oysters are a little more rare, they’re actually pretty hard to harvest, so they’re excellent accents and they stand out with a powerful presence. Purple spiny is likely going to be in high demand this year, with lavender being popular and even as we transition into bright pinks and #BarbieCore, purple will be a strong complementary color. ”

And it’s not just jewelry. Sure, that’s the first thing that comes to mind when we think of accessories, but don’t shy away from packing a little purple by way of a bag, boots, a belt, even a hat if you can get your hands on one!
