We just launched our Space Cowboy line, and ladies wonder where the inspiration came from. The short answer is something way different than the original meaning of the term. “Space Cowboy” originated in the 1960s and meant that someone was a pothead who smoked the wacky weed every day. That’s not us, even though we do tend to get a little punchy on the last day of photo shoots.
Cheryl, our design extraordinaire wanted to do Space Cowboy forever. What could be better than alien vixens come to take our cowboys? Cheryl found a cool, vintage belt buckle and knew it was time. Then, last year Gucci sent aliens down the runway with fall looks based on Star-Trek and sci-fi. We’ll go ahead and say we thought of it first, Gucci.

and key inspiration piece for Space Cowboy.

Space Cowboy emerged in pop culture in the 60’s and who said it first is a mystery. Steve Miller popularized it in his famous “Joker” song, a favorite of Cheryl’s in high school. “Some people call me the space cowboy, some people call me the gangster of love,” played in her car so many times; she wore her 8-track out!
In 2000, Clint Eastwood directed the movie Space Cowboys about old test pilots shot into space to fix a satellite. More recently, Kasey Musgraves released the song Space Cowboy, about “Mak(ing) Peace with what doesn’t belong. You will find something better.” It’s a beautiful song with haunting lyrics that blend in western movie images. “Sunsets fade and love does too / Yeah, we had our day in the sun / When a horse wants to run ain’t no sense in closing the gate / So you can have your space, cowboy.”

Maybe a little of all of this was in the back of our minds when we shot our models at Goldfield Ghost Town, in Arizona. Our take was combining cowboys with futuristic, throwback makeup and hair from 50’s movies like “It Came From Outer Space.”
Aliens visiting the “Wild West” inspired us too, and you can see a great example of that in our Roswell Rodeo Tee. Space + Cowboy = Space Cowboy. The main point is to be daring and not afraid to mix genres, colors, and looks.
Space Cowboy achieves that with classic western design elements and cool green space cat eye makeup. The greenish smoke in the background? It was just straight up cool.
