  • These Women Put Me to Shame

    August 19, 2010 1 min read 15 Comments

It's time for the annual Indian Market over in Santa Fe New Mexico and I'm wishing I could go.

. Not going to happen. . I'll have to settle for an "armchair traveler" virtual tour instead. Here are some images from last year's SWAIA Indian Clothing Contest and straight up I'll tell ya, .
these women put me to SHAME!

bead work comes from the spirit and the hand work. waste work. thats good work. i make my own new mardi gras indian queen suit as the big queen for pretty pretty black eagles. i put as much spirit and love into each new suit so the spirits will come with me when i wear it from indians on the other side. i imagine all these indians when they dance in these beautiful ceremonial pieces.

Shmuela, I can’t imagine everything that goes into beadwork…just so much patience, design, calculation and love. I’ve done very little myself, but boy, do I appreciate it!

Amazing! I’ve bought some very small beaded things and am so very glad to have them. I so appreciate all the good design and hard work that when into them.

I found alot of great things. I was in Ortegas and the jewelry designer Don Lucas came up and ask if he could help us. He looked like he just came in off the beach. I said “Do you work here?” All of the ladies that work there are so nicely dressed. I thought he was with his wife and just pulling a good one on us. He said well I designed all of this jewelry. Two cases full. I already had some of his earrings that I bought about five years ago. I just stood there with my mouth open. Of course I bought me another pair of his medit. coral earrings. I also bought a few slides and I love the old jewelry and I found an old zuni cuff and ring. I swear I would spend my last penny on Indian jewelry. I talked to the young man that is on the cover of Native Peoples magazine. We had lots of good food and even did some sightseeing. I can never get enough of Santa Fe. Thanks for asking.

I’m a Navajo jewelry hound myself…never can have enough. I would love to see the vintage cuff and ring you bought – if you feel like it, post it to our FB fan page.
