  • The Dead Live On!

    March 16, 2010 2 min read 5 Comments

OK, I'm not a big Deadhead, but I am a huge fan of the Grateful Dead's album covers and show posters.
    .
Since Jerry Garcia's (RIP) passing in 1995, the band has been in the process of disbanding and disbursing. Thankfully Eileen Law was able to preserve and archive their tantalizing ephemera and the University of California, Santa Cruz is now the lucky recipient of all things Dead.
    .
A recent feature in the New York Times tells the whole story, but for now won't you enjoy some of my favorite Dead graphics?
    .

    My all time favorite!

    .

. The Skeleton & Roses by pop artist Stanley Mouse is one of the most widely recognized rock icons ever and it has an interesting background:
The first time this image hit the scene was on an Avalon Ballroom concert poster, when the Dead were just another San Francisco rock band. Mouse and Kelley would spend their days in the back rooms of the San Francisco library digging through art books. When Kelley saw Edmund J. Sullivan's illustration of the Skeleton in the Rubaiyat, he said: "This has Grateful Dead all over it." The band related so well to the poster art that they then used it for an album cover, and eventually made it their logo.
    .

    .

Oh, you caught me - I thought I would slip this one in here for fun and to make sure you were on top of your game.   Please, I don't want any nasty comments about me not being Mr. Mouse.

    .

Love the Native Americans and the wonderful font .... so much so, I think I will use it as a spring board for a new tee!

    .

    .

I could stare at this one for hours and always uncover something new.

    .

    .

    Groovy, Baby!

    Note:

I'm not sure about Mr. Stanley Mouse, Mr. Alton Kelley, Mr. Rick Griffith, Mr. Lee Conklin, or  Mr. R.D. Thomas's artwork, but MINE  is definitely copyrighted and property of Double D Ranchwear™.

so don't go getting any cute ideas!

I love this stuff too! Back in high school and 1st year of college I worked in stores that sold posters, stickers, and t-shirts from the Dead among other jam bands. The Dead’s artwork is so varied and unique. I love the turtles a la Terrapin Station….oh the memories, and I’m not even old enough to have toured with the Dead. (I did meet Bob Weir about 7 years ago, when he was on tour with Ratdog!)

Linda, thanks for your comment. I researched “skeletons” back when I did our ‘Spanish Angels – Heaven Sent & Hell Bent’ collection and that is when I uncovered Stanley Mouse’s connection to the Dead. You probably will remember Stanley from his Rat Fink cartoons…remember those?

At one point I started to collect old rock and roll show posters, but the ones from my era were already sky high. I have a few – the really cool one of Bob Dylan with psycho hair and some early Fillmore shows.
