  • Miscellaneous, Tipi Model, Blackfoot With Ghost Dance Imagery, Provenance, Antique, 838

    TRADITIONALLY DETAILED

This vintage find brings part of the Native American culture to life. The tepee begins on a muslin cover that is placed over stripped willow branches tied together. The cover itself is detailed with traditional style polychrome painted figures, Ghost Dance imagery, and a red band with circles runs along the bottom. Finishing out the tepee is the old parfleche rawhide placed over the opening to act as the door. Each detail was well thought out and executed, crafting a piece full of history and character. A wonderful accent for anyone’s home.

A  Blackfoot model tipi with painted images on muslin and parfleche remnant door from the ex-James Flury collection. The piece was noted as an, “Early Model Tipi to Document Designs” in Blackfoot style of the early 1900’s as noted by Bruce Johnson. The piece exhibits a muslin tipi cover over stripped willow branch tipi poles tied together with Indian tanned hide ties on a hoop of willow ties with cotton thread at the bottom. The front shows a remnant of old parfleche rawhide as the door, likely from an old envelope with original polychrome painted finish tied with Indian tanned hide. The tipi is covered in traditional style polychrome painted figures such as a coiling snake in green and yellow outlined in black, a five-point star with full sun / moon as well as several five-point stars and crescent or half-moon on the back, all of which are Ghost Dance imagery. At the bottom is a red band with round circles. The top has trimmings in yellow.
