IN THE TRENCHES

There’s something irresistible and empowering about taking an icon and making it your own.

The traditional trench coat has a long and storied history with military origins and movie star mystique. Credited to Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh and British inventor Thomas Hancock, the first versions were waterproof WWI wear, made to protect soldiers from the unfavorable conditions of wet warfare in the trenches. Popularity ensued almost immediately, as an outward show of support for the troops among British civilians, but it could certainly be argued that the trench coat wasn’t launched into the style stratosphere until it was donned by the likes of silver screen legends Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca and Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The iconic outerwear has been adapted into countless iterations over the decades, not the least of which is our own DDR interpretation. We wanted to remain true to the key components that make a trench a trench – the belt, the shoulder epaulettes, the wide notch lapel – but the distinct difference is that we opted to craft it in our own level of luxe: a soft, supple suede with subtle western design lines.
