  • Cut and Shoot

    September 14, 2012 2 min read

According to a local legend, Cut and Shoot, Texas became a town after it was named in 1912 when a community-wide dispute almost led to a town in fury. As with any tale of the past involving confrontational sides, versions of how Cut and Shoot came to be the little town with 3 words in it's name, vary to say the least! ......................... A few adaptations claim the dispute was over design choices for the new steeple on the town's sole church. Other's swear the issue was about who would be the preacher. Still, some think the spitt'in was over church members claiming land. Regardless of people's stance on the confrontations in the community there is a common ground as to the next part of the story. . ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,...... . Reportedly, a little boy in town screamed, "I'm going to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute!" The bizarre and yet adorable from a small child stuck with the citizens of the town and in time, and it evolved into the town's name: Cut and Shoot. . ....................... . Time passed and life got back to normal in Cut and Shoot, until the town shot to fame when boxer Roy Harris (a native of Cut and Shoot) fought Floyd Patterson for the heavyweight title in 1958. After appearing on Sports Illustrated and Life Magazine, hundreds of pieces of fan mail was sent to Harris' address in Cut and Shoot. So much mail in fact, that that decade the U.S. Postal Services allowed for a franchise post office in the town. . ............................ . ............... . . .
